Plan Your Trip: Four Tips for Visiting the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum

Be Sure You’re Aware of the Operating Hours

The museum is open every Wednesday through Sunday, between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. The final entry to the museum is allowed at 4:15 p.m. on all days. The museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. Student and group tours, and special events like parties and weddings, can be scheduled for Mondays and Tuesdays before 10:00 a.m., but they must be arranged in advance by calling the museum.

Bring Enough Cash for Entry

Even though the museum is very affordable compared to other attractions in Memphis, you’ll still want enough cash on hand to pay for entry. You can also pay by credit or debit card. Adults are $13 each, and kids between ages five and 17 are $10 each. Kids ages four and under are free. You may also be interested in an $18 combo ticket that includes entry to the museum and to the nearby Memphis Music Hall of Fame Museum.

If you plan to be in Memphis for several days, you may want to purchase a Backstage Pass, which provides entry to this museum, Sun Studio, Stax Museum, and Elvis Presley’s Graceland at a discounted price of $89.00 each. You’ll save $27 by purchasing this bundle than if you were to pay full entry fees for all four attractions. Not only that, but you also receive a lanyard and pouch to display your ticket as you move around the city.

Consider the Exhibits You Want to See

There are seven permanent exhibits in the museum, so you’ll want to plan enough time to see all the exhibits that interest you the most. Rural Culture, Rural Music, Coming to Memphis, Sun Records & Youth Culture, Soul Music, Social Changes, and Bravo Gallery track the roots of American music from the fields of the Southern states and Delta gospel to live performances and labels of famous studios. You’ll be taken back in time to where rock ‘n’ soul began.

Be Aware of Possible COVID-19 Restrictions

Even as the country begins to open up after the global pandemic caused everything to shut down, you still may need to heed certain restrictions and guidelines when you visit the museum. Currently, you will be required to wear a mask when you’re viewing the exhibits and practice social distancing from other groups who are also in the museum. Capacity is limited, and your temperature may be taken before you enter. Check the website for the most current guidelines.

Memphis is the place to be to learn about the incredible musical history of the United States. While you’re in town, stop by Smith Imports to test drive a used Mercedes and make your entire trip an adventure.
